About Us...
The Langwith Whaley Thorns Heritage Association is a voluntary organisation dedicated to the representation of the heritage of the people of Whaley Thorns, Langwith and its environs.
Over the past 13 years, a collection of artefacts representing the life and history of the community has been gathered. The John Hyatt Collection consists of artefacts representing the social history of a rural farming community that was changed dramatically with the sinking of a coal mine in 1876.
Although the artefacts provide a snap shot of history when the lives of ordinary people were caught up in a period of great social change, they also illustrate how the traditions, which they brought with them from their rural experience, co-existed with the emerging social structure that evolved with industrialisation.
The John Hyatt Collection provides access to a very important aspect of local heritage. It enables the community to actively research their past and appreciate how it has helped to shape their lives today and it demonstrates the importance of the area to visitors.
